How to Dye Yarn

Step-by-step guide how to dye yarn using sock blanket.

What will you learn: How to dye yarn in harmonious colors, ombre and gradient effects.

How long is the course: Runs for 3 months, from June to August. Next course starts in July and in August. One tutorial every month with supplied materials.

Dyeing experience: You must be comfortable with handling yarn through all required processes: preparing, dyeing, washing, drying. Mixing and working with dyes. Bear in mind, this course is not a dyeing textbook. Instead, we are sharing our skills and knowledge how to create and apply colors to yarn.

You will need: Microwave and plastic container suitable for microwave.

Course breakdown

June: We'll show you dyeing techniques we used to create "Alberta" shawl. It has received a lot of attention within knitting community and was one of our successful colorways. Introduction to color wheel to achieve harmonious colors.

You will also receive:

  • 100gr/425m/464yards of undyed Merino / Nylon sock blanket.
  • Measuring spoons
  • Color wheel
  • Cups to mix the dyes
  • 5 colors of dye powder
  • Citric acid
  • Gloves and brush
  • Polythene sheet to cover working area
  • Step-by-step guide with high-quality photographs (printed).

July: Dyeing ombre. You'll learn how to create light-to-dark shades using one color.

You will also receive:

  • 100gr/425m/464yards of undyed Merino / Nylon sock blanket.
  • Measuring spoons
  • 1 colors of dye powder
  • Cups to mix the dyes
  • Citric acid
  • Gloves and brush
  • Polythene sheet to cover working area
  • Step-by-step guide with high-quality photographs (print).

August: Dyeing Basic gradient. Using just 2 colors, we show you how to create basic gradient with long and gradual color changes .

You will also receive:

  • 100gr/425m/464yards of undyed Merino / Nylon sock blanket.
  • Measuring spoons
  • 2 colors of dye powder
  • Cups to mix the dyes
  • Citric acid
  • Gloves and brush
  • Polythene sheet to cover working area
  • Step-by-step guide with high-quality photographs (print).

Bonus: Receive formulas of 5 most popular gradients.

  • 5 colors of powder dyes
  • 5 formulas / colourways of own gradients

Upon completion, you will gain knowledge and skills how to turn undyed spun yarn, into beautiful combination of colors.

    What other equipment will we need? Stove, oven, microwave, crockpot? Jar for solar dying? Thank you.

      Update: you will need 7 x jars to mix the dyes. Either glass, plastic or stainless steel. Microwave and plastic container which fits microwave.

      Yes all materials will be shipped anywhere in the world.

      Shipping is applied at the checkout page. UK is £13.50, everywhere else is £16.50.

      Theoretically it is possible, but I cannot confirm without practice.

      300-500ml should be sufficient. We use 1000ml plastic jars.

      Dear Janis, if you decide to use your own dyes we cannot guarantee end result to look like ours. At the moment we don’t have any other options.
